Everyone knows the big name classic rock songs. "Don't Stop Believin'," "Carry On My Wayward Son," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Kashmir," etc. To name all of the big name songs from back in the day would be quite the feat.
Disclaimer: I'm using the term "classic rock" to define anything from before the 90s, because I was born in the 90s, and so things before then are old and classic to me.
Here are five songs that you may not have heard from back in the day, that you're glad you listened to now:
1. Dazed and Confused, Led Zeppelin
This song comes in waves of hard rock, followed by more mellow phases of lyric-driven recitations of desire and, you guessed it, confusion.
2. Run Like Hell, Pink Floyd
As this song comes near the end of Pink Floyd's album, "The Wall," it represents a dark place in Roger Waters' mind. The paranoia present in the song, and the lyrics, "They're gonna send you back to momma in a cardboard box," is unnerving and always sends me shivers.
3. Asleep, The Smiths
Although a different style of band, and being active in the 80s, the Smiths are technically a rock band. "Asleep" captures a lot of the tone of the Smiths, albeit a sad tone. It's still quality music all the same.
4. Up Around The Bend, Creedence Clearwater Revival
My educated guess is that this is the most well known song on this list so far, its best competition being "Dazed and Confused." Nonetheless, the introductory guitar riff is gorgeous, and this song is featured in Remember the Titans, so it's great.
5. It's Still Rock And Roll To Me, Billy Joel
The blues-y fashion of "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," as well as the principle of the song being on Rock and Roll makes it a fair choice for this list. Not only does it provide a little more variety to the other styles of rock here, it's also simply a good song. Enjoy.
I know I have to have missed plenty of classics, so let me hear about it and maybe they'll find their way into another article, or into my Spotify library.
