With finals over and being stranded at home for a couple of weeks, you will probably get bored pretty soon. Or in my case, after a few days. Luckily, it's easy enough to rent a movie or catch up on tv almost instantly. Here a few tv show suggestions to keep you occupied during the winter break.
1. "Adam Ruins Everything"
Growing up, I loved shows like "Mythbusters" which aimed to clarify and refutes misconceptions. Currently showing on truTV, "Adam Ruins Everything" is based on the Colleghumor web series of the same name. The host Adam Conover covers a wide variety of topics, such as false assumptions of the wild west to the horrible origin of the term "jaywalker." The election special that aired this year was phenomenal. Not only is it filled with great humor, but the show also publishes all of the sources used for fact checking with each episode. It's availible on demand for most cable companies
2. "Community"
It feels like I am beating a dead horse with a stick each time I recommend "Community" to people. If you are a big fan of "Parks and Rec," "The Office," "Arrested Development," or any other quirky TV comedy, "Community" is perfect for you. The show follows a group of community college students and their experiences at their crazy school. Dan Harmon, co-creator of "Rick and Morty" is the creator and producer of this TV show. The cast is fabulous and they always have the perfect guest stars as teachers of the college. It has some of best writing for a show in the past decade. "Community" is available on Hulu.
3. "Batman: The Animated Series"
Up to this point, I have focused on comedies, but I decided to drop back to that childhood nostalgia. With all of the times Batman has appeared in live action films, it felt something has been missing to his character. In other words, each director has tried making him darker, grittier, or adding camp elements as a way of getting the audience's attention. However "Batman: The Animated Series" takes everything we love about Batman, those timeless qualities and created a perfect representation of him. You have him solving crimes, stopping death traps and Robin joining his crusade without it seeming ridiculous. The villains were spot on, the dialogue was crisp and organic, and you did not need to know everything about the characters since they give you the muscle without the fat. In my opinion, no other actor can match Kevin Conroy's Batman with the "I am vengeance" speech or Mark Hamill's Joker laugh. Finally, as I droll on about the topic, Paul Dini's episodes are a huge inspiration for my writing. "BTAS" is included with Amazon Prime.
4. "Ash vs Evil Dead"
Ok, let's now go the complete opposite end of the television spectrum. Ever since I watched the original "Evil Dead" trilogy, I've been a huge fan of director Sam Rami and cult actor Bruce Campbell. With the darker reboot of "The Evil Dead" premiering a few years ago, I wondered what our favorite lovable idiot was up to. This TV series has not only answered my questions but has me begging for more. The blood and guts are cranked up to an eleven, the one-liners are on point, and delivers what the fans want while being packed with a great mix of classic rock. This has been of the few shows that I have kept up with. "Ash" can be watched with a Starz subscription or add on.
5. "Firefly"
This wonderful list would be incomplete without mentioning this wonderful gem. "Firefly" is a wonderful combination of science-fiction and western tropes. The show follows a group of people on the Firefly-class serenity as they take on a variety of legal and illegal jobs in the pioneer culture of space. The show has everything you want: heart, soul, action, humor, compelling plots, and characters you actually care about. This is the true definition of a cult classic. "Firefly" is on Netflix.
