5 Truths I Learned About in Scotland

It was a blast to be able to see my friend Bri in Glasgow two weekends ago and have her show me the beautiful country that is Scotland. Compared to London, it was a nice change of pace than what I have been used to and I miss it already. While being there over the weekend, I learned a few things about Scotland that I didn't know previously. Here are the top 5 truths of Scotland!

1. The people are so friendly!

After being in London where nobody talks to each other on the tube or on the streets, it was very refreshing to have people who genuinely want to know how you are doing. From a caring uber driver talking about his birthday coming up to people on the street wondering if they can help, it was nice.

2. The animals are even friendlier!

Even better, the animals in Scotland want compassion as well. In London, you are lucky if one dog wants to interact with you. However, in Scotland, while walking in the parks, we had multiple dogs come up so we could pet them and be loved. Even the squirrels wanted to say hi as well. The coos (highland cows) may be a little angry, but that's just because they want food.

3. Haggis is not that bad.

When in Scotland, become like a Scot! After having a delicious haggis burger, I can say that haggis is delicious, despite its gross name.

4. Scotland has a lot of rich culture.

It's not just kilts and bagpipes people! Although those are the first things that come to mind, Scotland is more than that. Did you know their national animal is a unicorn? Amazing. There are artists, writers, and explorers all from Scotland that have helped create culture for all to witness. Especially in Glasgow, which is less touristy, you really get to see what true Scotland is all about.

5. Scotland is beautiful.

On Sunday, we climbed a cliff walk in Perth and saw most of Scotland, and it was phenomenal. London is pretty as well, but to see so much green and to be so above the ground was breathtaking. I felt like I was in a dream.

So overall, Scotland is an amazing country that I would definitely recommend anyone checking out if you have time. You will not be disappointed!

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general.
