As much as we hate to admit it, we all know that trashy reality TV is our guilty pleasure. But when you've had it up to here with Teen Mom and the Bachlorette, try out these great reality TV shows.
1. Bridalplasty
It was canceled after one season on E! in 2010 scored a 2.9/10 on IMDB , but it's without a doubt the worst and best reality TV show I've ever seen. During the month it was on Netflix, I binged watched all 10 of the half hour episodes in one sitting, last winter break. Bridalplasty takes 12 women who want a free wedding of their dreams, including a new wedding-ready bod. You heard me. The winner gets a wish list of free plastic surgeries done to them, and the challenge winners each week get to pick one surgery from their wish lists. Meanwhile, they are competing to become bridal experts by having cake tastings, bouquet making competitions, and vow writing competitions. It's like a mix between Bridezillas and Botched, with a sprinkling of High school drama mixed in. There's currently no free way to watch it online, but look for a season at the library, or pray that it gets back on Netflix again. If it does you don't want to miss it.
2. Married At First Sight
It's a relatively new show for desperate 30 somethings who have given up on love, and it is angering advocates for marriage equality everywhere. This A&E show has a Psychologist, a Sociologist, and a Sexologist match up couples and put them through the experiment of a lifetime: Getting married at first sight and trying to make it work. These couples don't catch a glimpse of one another until they are literally walking down the aisle. The couples have 6 weeks to do everything a normal married couple would do, and at the end of it they have the option to get a divorce. Will they stay together? Will they hate each other? What do their families think of this? Watch it here to catch up and get addicted: http://www.aetv.com/married-at-first-sight it's also on FYI.
3. Double Divas
It's like Jersylicious, but surprisingly, it's trashier. This Lifetime show chronicles the daily life of the owners of the LiviRae Lingerie store. Some adventures you'll find on the first season: creating a bra for a women whose boobs are larger than a 5th grader in fetal position, a plus sized pin up photo shoot where they use a pumpkin as a bra, a real life country hick wedding, and the real life Haley Dunphy learns how to relay phone messages. This show captivates by you using the same part of your brain that allows you to tolerate Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. But it's still on Netflix, and we know you have nothing to do this summer. Don't have Netflix? Watch the second season here: http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/double-divas.
4. Supersize vs. Superskinny
This British television show on Channel 4 matches up two people. One super sized, one super skinny. The two are brought to a clinic where they are taught about how their eating habits are effecting their life and body, but they don't stop there. They then have each person swap diets for three days. The underweight person eats more food in one day then most could consume in a week, and the overweight person eats nothing but a small snack or a cup of coffee. The show uses shock tactics by having the contestants visit with people who have medical issues associated with over or under eating, in an attempt to convince them conform to a healthy lifestyle. If you're super bored and you want to watch a British TV series screw with some unhealthy people, this is the show for you. You can watch a majority of the episodes on YouTube.
5. True Beauty
This ABC reality show takes 10 beautiful and vain contestants and tells them that they are competing to become the “face of Vegas": the winner will get $100,000 and be featured in People Magazine's 100 most beautiful people issue. What they don't know is that they are actually competing to see who is the most beautiful on the inside. Although there are real challenges, they also compete in hidden challenges so the judges can see how they act when no one is watching. You get to see pretty people called out on all their bulls***, and it's fun to watch the mean people get kicked off when the judges reveal the true meaning of the contest. True Beauty is not available online, so buy it on amazon, or check it out at the library! Watch the promo trailer here.
