This presidency has been the longest four years, and the time for another presidential election is finally upon us. A new decade, new year, and new opportunity to vote for someone into office who will work towards a better future for everyone in this country. The current political climate is overwhelming unsettling.
If you're not upset at what's currently happening, you're not staying informed enough. This presidential election is extremely crucial for implementing change towards national crises that need to be addressed. For the next few months, some friendly reminders on how to survive the presidential election that will make or break this nation.
Stay informed.
It's 2020. There are so many different outlets for obtaining your daily news. Podcasts updated by the hour, notifications sent to your phone, even the exaggerated magazine covers set up by the cash registers at your local stores provide some sort of context on what events are happening. This is not the time to live by the mantra "ignorance is bliss." This is the time to find a credible source for news and to be critically aware of current events -good and bad.
Watch the debates.
It doesn't matter what political party you lean more towards, watching the debates is beneficial for everyone. The debates can provide insight (and unfortunately, sometimes even a comical relief) to what each individual has in mind for how they hope to progress the country towards their idea of a better direction. Take it as you will, how they respond to concerning issues, their stances on political affairs, amongst other questions from the audience, reflects their character in some way.
The deadline to register to vote varies state by state. You can check the deadline for your state here by selecting your state in the drop-down menu. After selecting your state, it will provide you election deadlines and dates. Vote.org provides an extensive amount of resources such as checking if you're already registered to vote, obtaining an absentee ballot, and finding your polling place.
Follow through with voting.
No excuses. Absentee ballots, early voting, or voting by mail are all options that avoid the chaos of showing up to your local polling station to vote on election day. Everyone's new year resolution should be to go out and vote. This new year's resolution will affect us for the next four years. Make the time, plan accordingly, and do research on all of the candidates.
Never give up.
If the last four years have taught me anything, it's that no matter how awful things get, you cannot become desensitized to the situations; you have to keep fighting for what is right. The president is a powerful title that deserves to be held by an individual who will have integrity when making decisions. In the darkest days, we have to keep working and striving towards brighter days of addressing the ongoing important issues in this country.
