5 Tips On Surviving 20

"Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young." -Henry Ford

They say that once you reach twenty years old you must start finding yourself. You should know what your dreams are and who it is you want to become in the coming years. The funny thing is though that we as a generation consider being twenty one of the most useless ages. Think about it you no longer are a teenager so you cannot do childish things and get away with it anymore. You are not fully a lawful adult either, so you can't go do things an adult would have an amazing time doing. Then why is it that in the most useless age, we need to already have a clear image of who to become and what we should do with our life? Here are five reasons why 20 is actually one of the most important ages that we encounter in our lives.

1. College:

This reason never gets old. You are 20 years old. Enjoy college, take in all the extra curricular clubs and festivals. Bask in old breakups and new friendships!

2. Life has A LOT to offer!

You are still young! Go out and start seeing the world. Meet new people and form relationships. Find and explore different cultures. Right now you have no strings attached to yourself. Why not take advantage of that? Once you are married and have a child, it is going to be hard to just get up and go. Being spontaneous jumps out the window. You will have the joys of fatherhood/motherhood, but deep down somewhere you do not want regrets to form. Because where there is regret, there can be jealousy, anger, hate.

3. Developing Skills:

This is the best time in your life to develop different skills and various techniques. It is easier to learn something at a young age and keep on practicing as you grow old. That way you can have skills such as cooking and photography. Find your passions and what makes you happy!

4. As time goes by you will become restrictive.

The older you get, the more fears settle in. You cannot do what you used to. Either you are too old or too scared to do crazy things! This is the time where you can start making a list and getting all those crazy things ticked off the bucket list.

5. Who you are?

Over time all these things I have mentioned above will help you find out who you are. All of these things are there for you to not only enjoy the moment you are living in but developing a sense of what you are becoming. 20 is the first step into a new person that you soon shall be.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
