Did you know that your risk for melanoma doubles if you've ever had more than five sunburns? That's pretty scary considering I usually turn lobster-red at least once a year.
UV rays make summer fun, but they're also very dangerous. We love when summer arrives, and for some this means enhanced tan lines, but if you're like me, then this means you better coat yourself in sunscreen and hope for the best. Sunburn doesn't look good, and it feels even worse. However, no matter how much sunscreen you put on, or how much preventative measures you take, sunburn will eventually happen to you. When it happens, it's good to know the best ways to treat it.
So I have combined knowledge from myself and www.skincancer.org to tell you the best ways to help your body heal.
1. Moisturize
You can usually find after-sun lotion at you local stores, especially in the summertime. It is best to moisturize after bathing and while your skin is still slightly damp. It is also important to remember to moisturize for days after your sunburn occurs. This will help with peeling, while also providing comfort to your sensitive skin.
2. Drink Fluids
Drinking fluids is super important because the burn will cause fluids to go to the surface of your skin and away from the rest of your body. This can eventually cause dehydration, so it is vital to continue drinking fluids until your skin has healed. While any drink is acceptable, www.skincancer.org says water or sports drinks are best because they quickly replenish electrolytes.
3. Decrease inflammation
Taking things like ibuprofen can really help with inflammation, swelling and redness of the skin. While it doesn't seem like much, these little things add up to be a big help.
4. Vinegar
As gross as this sounds, I can testify and say that this works wonders. If the sunburned area is small, then I usually take a cotton ball with apple cider vinegar on it and dab it onto my skin. However, if the area is really large then it is also helpful to put some in cold bathwater and sit in it. The smell is gross, but the results are fantastic.
5. Soothe with Aloe
While this may not heal as fast as you'd like, you would be surprised at how soothing it can be. I personally enjoy putting my aloe in the fridge so that when I use it, it provides extra cooling.
These are just a few methods that really work for me. I've already had to use these things this summer, because when you're as pale as me, there is no escaping the wrath of the sun. However, it is important for everyone to stay safe and enjoy the UV rays while also playing it safe!
