I have now successfully made it through two months of college. In this dime, I've learned quite a few things between classes, social life, and whatever I find to occupy what little time I have left.
1. Your health come first.
This may sound obvious, but it is so easy to forget to eat meals, sleep enough, and leave time for yourself. When I first moved, I was so busy that I wouldn't even realize I had missed a meal. Always make sure that your needs are taken care of. That homework assignment or event can wait a few extra minutes.
2. Budget.
There are two major things you should worry about budgeting: money and time. College students are generally not the richest people, right? Sometimes you have to ask if that Steak 'N' Shake trip is really worth it. Time is arguably the more important of the two, however. You can be poor and still need to budget your time. Make time for all the things you have to do, so you have time to do things you want to do too!
3. Get involved!
I can't tell freshmen just how important this one is. When you get to school, it will be one of the most overwhelming experiences of your life. So many events will be going on. Attend some and find out where your interests fit in. I promise, there is a place for everyone. Take the time to find your niche.
4. Remember what you're there for.
Don't forget to focus on your education and goals. You don't want to be put back a semester because you took too few credits or dropped too many. Make sure to stay on track without overdoing it.
5. Have fun!
Its so important to focus on your schoolwork, but make sure you have free time too. Some of your best friends will be the ones you make in college and the memories will be with you forever. These are the last few years before you have to fully focus on your career, so take advantage of it and have some fun without losing sight of your goals. It really is possible to balance.
Good luck!
