5 Tips For Visiting Magic Kingdom

I have been going to Walt Disney World ever since I was born and now have had the amazing opportunity to work there for the past 7 months. Between going practically every weekend to now working there, I have picked up on quite a few things that not everyone would know.

1. Always carry some cash with you

After working on a cart that is cash only, having cash to pay for Disney merchandise is a plus. Yes, there are the magic bands that are connected to your credit card, but come on, it is technology. Technology, even at the most magical place on earth, doesn’t always work.

2. You can get free water

And no, the water is not from those nasty water fountains. The price of water bottles went up to $3, which is a lot for a bottle of water. Go into any quick service location and just ask for a cup of water. Boom, free water. You’ll thank me for that on those hot, muggy Florida summer days.

3. You do not need to watch the parade on Main Street

Watching the parade on main street isn’t really the best place to watch, unless you want to wait almost three hours roasting in the sun. For the Festival of Fantasy parade at 3 pm (“what time is the 3 o’clock parade?” asks every guest), sit in Frontierland or Liberty Square. You can even find a spot 30 minutes before the parade and then run over to Splash Mountain to cool over. Trust me, you’ll definitely want to take advantage of the short wait. And besides, with the sun out pretty much all the time, except for during the afternoon storms, you’ll dry pretty darn quickly.

4. Same goes for the night time parade and fireworks

I have watched families stake out a spot for the Main Street Electrical Parade starting at 7 pm and the parade doesn’t start until 9. So don’t even expect to find a seat on Main Street 30 minutes before the parade is set to step off. Everyone is going to want to stand on Main Street to watch Wishes post parade, so if you don’t feel like standing around with 40-50 thousand of your closest friends who have spent all day outside and don’t understand that you need to reapply deodorant, then go stand in Liberty Square or Fantasyland. Yeah, you don’t get the same view of the castle, and in Fantasyland the fireworks are shot off behind you, but you’ll have quite a bit more room to breath.

5. Need to escape the heat? Visit the resorts!

At Magic Kingdom, there are three resorts along the monorail track. All have quick service, as well as table service restaurants. Just by hoping on the resort monorail, there are three new places to explore, especially when the heat of summer starts to kick in. The pool isn’t open to guests who aren’t staying at the resort, but there are shops to explore and restaurants to eat at.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
