5 Tips For Surviving A Midwestern Winter

Many of my friends at college have had their first experiences with a snowy and cold winter either during their time at Beloit, or this semester specifically. As someone who was born and raised in the Midwest, spending most of my life in Minnesota, I consider myself a bit of a Midwestern winter expert. I hope to offer some tips to my friends and others that are experiencing this for the first time so you can stay warm and have fun this winter!

1. Prepare for lots of snow.

So we've had our first snowfall in Beloit, and it was a whopping 10 inches of white, fluffy delight. However, this is only the beginning, and the snow will continue to replenish itself for the rest of the winter. The white substance you once found so enchanting will slowly, or quickly for some, lose its charm. Soon it will only be a nuisance, and you will miss the grass.

2. Good winter wear is important.

If you are able to, purchase a good winter coat and a good pair of boots. Boots in this part of the country are almost a necessity. The ground is a slippery danger zone and the ground is covered by cold, deep snow that can only be traversed with boots. A coat will keep you warm against the negative windchill that is sure to come our way this season. But regardless of whether or not you can purchase good boots and a coat....

3. Layer!

Layering is absolutely a necessity. Layer a t-shirt under a sweatshirt under a jacket. Multiple pairs of socks if you need. Your body is important and it is better to have too many layers than not enough.

4. Watch your step.

In all respects during this season, be cautious. Whether you're walking to class or driving your car, take extra care. One misstep and you could fall to the ground, and black ice on the roads is a real hazard. As my high school teachers would say, "Do the penguin shuffle!" Be careful so you don't fall and bruise your butt like I already have.

5. Winter can be fun!

Even though many aspects of this season are a cold and icy hell, there are many activities that can only be done during this season. Ice skating, sledding, snowboarding, skiing, and tubing are all extremely fun activities to enjoy this season. Snow, when packable, is perfect for building sculptures and forts as well.

To everyone reading, whether you are from the Midwest originally or not, be safe and warm this winter season!

College is a crazy, beautiful, amazing whirlwind. It is highly popularized in television and movies, but not necessarily in the most accurate way. Yes, there's frats, dingy dorms, raging house parties—but there's also a lot that people fail to mention.

1. If you thought that you knew how to study, you're wrong.

All of your classes aren't taught every day, so professors aren't on your case constantly about reading and memorizing material. Once you get back that "questionable" first exam grade, you'll kick it into high gear and figure out what works for you

Girl With Bleached Hair
Tumblr

I've been a bleach blonde for over a year now, and let me tell you, it is a lifestyle. More hair appointments, longer showers, and special shampoo. But it is totally worth it!

1. Mentally preparing yourself to convince your hair dresser that white is the way to go.

2. Or the anxiety of what could go wrong by bleaching your hair at home.

3. You could either become a ginger

4. Or a pixie

5. The face you make in the mirror when you take off your towel to unveil the perfect white strands.

6. Taking a million selfies the day you bleached it, because you know your roots will be back in literally 2 days.

7. Having to get bangs or a big chop because your hair is so damaged.

8. Having orange highlights in between touch-ups.

9. Going out for a drink afterwards to debut your updated look.

Despite the struggles, you love your platinum blonde hair! You make sure Instagram knows it, too. You don't need a filter, because the color is flawless by itself!

Finals: just thinking about them gives you anxiety. Only two weeks separate you from summer, but they're the longest of the semester. I've been at this college thing for almost three and a half years, and while I thought that high school was truly the lowest point of my existence, I'm beginning to realize that it was a walk in the park. Like, I miss the days when the biggest white lie I told my parents was my made up excuse about being late for fourth period. These days, the white lies are a tad more complex, and as ashamed as I am to admit it, I've definitely told a few of these.
