5 Tips For Feeling More Confident

This topic relates to the one I addressed in my previous article about the self-date. Going out by myself helped with my confidence level, but it also took a little bit of confidence to do it. So, in this article I want to talk about confidence.

Let's be honest: there aren't many completely confident people on this planet. Many of those that we envy for their confidence are most likely pretending because they want to appear as confident as others seem to be.

You may not be feeling confident in a certain area or you may just feel uncomfortable in general, but hopefully I can help with that. Being awkward and uncomfortable happens to be my specialty. I'll give you a few tips that have helped me along the way.

Some tips:

1. Embrace the awkward.

There will be times when you will feel like you don't belong. In reality, you aren't the only one who feels that way. Accept the fact that you're uncomfortable, but acknowledge that other people are too.

2. Visualize success.

Giphy

This sounds cliche, but it helps. The thoughts you allow yourself to dwell on will deeply affect your confidence level. If you tell yourself that your worst nightmare is the least logical outcome of whatever situation you face, you'll feel better.

3. Have someone supporting you.

Giphy

This is probably the most important tip. You can't gain confidence if the people in your life are constantly tearing you down. Find someone, even if it's just one person, who builds you up and makes you feel like you can handle whatever is ahead of you.

4. Do it anyway.

Giphy

This is the most difficult part. You acknowledge that you feel uncomfortable, you imagine yourself succeeding at what you are attempting, you have your friend by your side, now all you can do is just swallow the fear and jump right in. You may make a mess of the situation, but that won't be the end of the world. Sometimes the best way to learn what not to do is to mess up. Failure is a part of life, so there's no reason to fear it.

5. Repeat.

This process will take some time to sink in. You won't be completely confident in just one day. Let it take time; you'll start noticing the difference and be grateful for all the hard work.

Now that you are feeling slightly surer of yourself, it's time to face whatever challenge you're afraid of. This recipe does not ensure that you'll be confident immediately; like I said, this is a process. Hopefully, though, these tips will help you along the way.

I'm confident that you'll be alright!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
