College is scary. Period. However, college is a different type of scary. It's the opportunity to dive into the abyss of the unknown. It's the transition from total dependance to independence. Technically, you are an adult but I wouldn't necessarily claim being a true adult. I'm in the "adulting" phase; I'm halfway independent but I rely on my parents for some things. At college, you have to take responsibility for yourself because mommy and daddy aren't a phone call away to fix everything, especially for students that went out of state for school. Nonetheless, college may be the best time of your life, so make the most of it. The following are just a few of the many things that incoming freshman should know.
1. Be Yourself.
College is a time for self-discovery. I guarantee that you will not be the exact same person you were in high school, and that might be a change for the better. Don't try to fit in. Do You, Boo!
2. Get Out Of Your Room!
Literally, get up and go out. Make friends and try new things. Your bed will always be there when you get back.
3. Put in those hours.
No, like really, WORK. Work, and work even harder. It will pay off. Whether it is studying for an exam, working on a research project or preparing for a club event, deliver your best work.
4. Your friends will change.
The friends you make at orientation, first semester, or even your roommates may not be your friends when the year ends. It is okay. People come and go in your life. View those failed friendships as learning experiences. Quality always over quantity!
5. Change your major?
You can't possibly have your life planned out at 18 and it is okay. Explore the majors your school has to offer and see what path is for YOU! Not your parents.
Enjoy Freshman year! You only have one :)
