5 Thoughts We All Have During Syllabus Week

Now this is why I love the beginning of the semester so much.

5 Thoughts We All Have During Syllabus Week

Syllabus week is ones of the best weeks of the semester. You just had a substantial break where you caught up on sleep and binge-watched Netflix. You're excited to be back at school with your friends and are motivated to do well this semester. No wonder everyone loves syllabus week. We all know those feelings that come back at the beginning of the semester.

1. This semester is going to be so easy!

That first day of class is exciting and it seems like you have everything under control. You have the syllabus for every class and the books you ordered online from the campus bookstore. You're going to class and have an assignment or two here and there. You're not stressed and you're ahead of schedule. In fact, it seems like your schedule is going to be pretty great with all this free time.

2. I love everyone!

You're finally catching up with the friends you missed so much over break. Everyone is excited to see each other and has time to hang out at the same time! Everyone's in a great mood, which is probably because they don't have a ton of work. You might even feel more friendly than usual. After all, you love your school so much in this moment that you feel like you're a spokesperson.

3. Ooh... school supplies!

This is the time when you have an excuse to buy all brand new shiny school supplies. There is nothing more exciting than opening those new notebooks and pens on the first day of class. When you're in college, new notebooks and pens are pretty exciting. Even better, back to school time happens twice a year, instead of just once. That's the magic of having two semesters. (Forget about the fact that there are more exams.)

4. I'm motivated!

You decide you're going to get your best grades yet this semester. This is the year you'll create a study schedule and stick to it. You might even venture into the library to get some work done. No cramming here! You can't wait to get started and you might be feeling a little too confident.

5. I have so much free time.

Weekly meetings haven't been set up yet and your planner is looking pretty empty. It's almost like you're back in high school again. You have time to hang out and do whatever you want once you finish your homework (because your homework can be done in thirty minutes or less). Don't get used to it though; your planner will be overwhelmingly full within the next few minutes.

Unfortunately, these feelings of excitement and motivation fade away once you remember why you were so ready to go home for winter break. Stress sets in and you start to think more about midterm exams than hanging out with your friends. But don't worry, syllabus week will be here again soon.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
