It's that time of year again! It is time to head back over to our second home, and for freshmen, your new home! Along with the excitement and anxious feelings comes the dreaded packing. If you are anything like me, you will procrastinate until very last minute. There is just so much to do and packing takes more time than you would think.
1. What do I need?
Everything. You need everything that will make you feel at home at your dorm. You don't want to be at school without the comfort of knowing you have whatever you need right there with you. Sure, you can go to the store, but why spend money when you can pack it and bring it with you? Right? Right.
2. What clothes should I bring?
Jeans? Sweatpants? Hoodies? Should I bring some clothes now then more after break? I know it's stressful because you have no clue what the weather will be like. Unless you live close to the school, you can't just drive home to get weather appropriate clothing.
3. How many pairs of shoes should I bring?
Now this is the hardest decision ever. Especially for girls. I have so many shoes and it's impossible to decide. Space is limited in dorm rooms and you don't want to be tripping over shoes all day and night. Then you start narrowing down. I need sneakers, dress shoes, boots, etc. but then you think "but I really love this pair so I need these, oh and these" then your taking 50 pairs.
4. Should I just pay someone to do this?
I considered this more times then I should have. It seems much easier to just pay someone then to sit for hours and probably get barely anything done. It's not just laziness, but it's knowing how hard packing for months of living somewhere else really is. If this thought hasn't crossed your mind at least once, you're lying. The big move-in day is coming up and you have nothing done. So now you should stop procrastinating and get to it!
5. Now I'm packed, but do I have enough space?
After all the stress and contemplating what you need and don't need, now you're thinking, did I over pack? Do I really need this? Or this? I know when I finished packing and stepped back to look at my heaping pike of stuff I thought "wow, where am I putting this all?" Once you get to school, you'll realize you have more space and storage then you originally thought so you should be ok.
Well now you're packed all that's left to do is load it into the car, unload it and put it all away. Yeah, all that's left to do sounds easy, right? Once you get to college and everything organized all the nerves and stress will go away. You just have to make it through that packing and transitioning stage which can be overwhelming, especially if you procrastinate as much as I do. Once that's over, be ready to have the best times of your life at your second home.
