1. I Have No Idea Where I'm Going
A new job, a new building and new people. Being in a place that is totally unfamiliar can become confusing and scary all in one. You might get lucky and get a tour your first day, but even then being able to remember where the different rooms and departments are can get overwhelming. You become an amazonian explorer searching for clues that lead you through two buildings and 12 different departments. Fear not, a trusty map and confident spirit may get you to where you want to go.
2. Shaking Everyone's Hand Is Terrifying
First impressions are everything and being introduced to bosses and coworkers can be intimidating. Millions of thoughts rush through your mind when first meeting the people you are potentially working for and it’s easy to be nervous and make mistakes. Accidental interruptions and sweaty palms are normal reactions;know that having confidence and taking the initiative can create a lasting first impression.
3. Can I Really Call My Coworkers By Their First Name?
During childhood you’ve learned to call everyone the standard Mr. Ms. Mrs. etc., but now as an adult there is an almost unspoken rule that it is okay to call coworkers by their first name. It feels out of place and even disrespectful at first but getting to know fellow work mates and having this informal connection with them can influence future collaborations.
4. No One Tells You What To Do
By the second or third day of your adventure in internship-land you should feel more comfortable where you are and with the people you work with. However, you are treated as an adult which means no one will hold your hand. Sure you can slack off for a minute when your boss orders pizza for lunch and the entire department gathers for a feast, but a job is still a job.
5. You Absolutely Have To Take Initiative
Nothing gets done without communication. You’re expected to do your job correctly the first time around and if you can't follow directions then you may not be seen as the right person for the job. Asking questions and becoming friendly with coworkers can get projects done quicker. Your first instinct may be to hide away from everyone and complete your work quietly in a separate space, but you must fight this instinct and be fearless in taking initiative.
