If they haven't gone back already, colleges are gearing up to begin the new semester, which means students are coming from all over back to their home away from home. And truthfully, most of us are ready to go back. We love our families and catching up with old friends, but the campus has become our home, regardless of the stress that comes with classes and scheduling.... and working....
But I digress. Here are a few thoughts students have when we know our break is over soon.
1. "I definitely didn't do everything I was planning."
Speaking from experience, I have a tendency to arrive home and crash. I sleep like a rock, and have actually found myself drowsy for a few days upon my arrival simply because my body is trying to recover from the stress of finals, or whatever assignment that had me stressed until the final days before break.
2. "I don't feel very... rested."
Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with helping around the house, or even working a few shifts. But sometimes what we see as resting is perceived as laziness, which can cause some conflict. Our to do list doesn't really end, it just changes its center temporarily, which means students don't always get to relax the way they originally intended.
3. "Is it time to go back yet?"
As much as I enjoy being back home, more often than not, I am more than ready to return to campus with the time comes. Being able to make decisions without having to double check if it's acceptable, and being able to manage my own schedule is a thing I've come to value, particularly when I don't have it anymore.
4. "Can I get a minute?"
Living in a house like mine means there's a lot of interaction. That's great! It can get a little overwhelming though. Sure, there isn't a roommate at home, but siblings have a tendency to want to catch up on lost time, which means literally being followed around the house while they talk their heads off. It's a show of love, certainly, though a bit overwhelming.
5. "My friends live so far away!"
I'm used to people living within walking distance, and when I'm home, I have to drive most everywhere. It's harder to make plans and just drop by to check in. Obviously, walking everywhere doesn't work in real life, but it's nice while it lasts, right? Eating dinner with friends is a lot more fun than searching for leftovers.
We love being home, we really do. We get to see our animals, our brothers and sisters, and our parents, who love us regardless of how they show it. But there's nothing like living next door to your best friend, and getting ready with your roommate, giving each other critical advice on today's outfit. College is an experience I don't regret, and going back means creating more memories.
