The end of spring semester is rapidly approaching, and for many, it’s already over. As a result, college students all over the country will be packing up their dorms to move back home for the summer.
As anyone has ever moved knows, moving out is always harder than moving in. I mean, you have to pack up everything and make sure the place is clean for the next residents. Not only that, but you’re also leaving a place you called home, which is kind of depressing. And moving out of a dorm room is no exception. Here are only 5 thoughts on-campus college students have while they are packing up their dorm.
1. I’ve been looking for *that* since September!
At the beginning of fall semester, I bought some books because I like to read and I had every intention of reading them. Then I put them in my trunk and forgot all about them until I found them the other week. Everyone packing up their dorm has a similar experience.
2. Where did all of this mess come from?
Most dorms require that you do basic clean up before you leave: vacuum the carpet, clean the bathroom (if you’re lucky enough to have one), straighten up the furniture, and wipe down most surfaces. Of course, you might think you’re dorm room’s not that messy until you have to actually clean it. Let me just say, scrubbing a tile floor with Clorox disinfecting wipes because that’s all you have is not fun.
3. How do I have so much stuff? Where the heck did it come from?
This is an inevitable thought that every on-campus student has. When did I bring all these shoes up here? Why do I have so many sweaters? Where did these random books come from? Who packed all of these hangers? And how am I going to fit all this stuff in the car?
4. I haven’t even used *this* thing, so why do I have it?
Especially if you’re a freshman. When you’re packing to move into the dorm, you feel the need to prepare for the apocalypse. But you didn’t actually need that iron and ironing board (you don’t even know how to iron). And now you either have to drag it home or find someone who actually needs it.
5. Do I really have to leave?
Ultimately, your dorm room has become your home, so leaving it is really sad. Also, packing it up and cleaning is a pain in the butt, and you just want to avoid doing that completely. But, you’ll either be taking a break by going home before returning to the dorm next year or starting your next adventure by getting your first apartment.
Leaving the place you’ve called home for almost a year is bittersweet and a little frustrating, but think of packing up a dorm room as practice for the inevitable moving that most young adults end up doing throughout their lives.
