Movie night is usually full of popcorn flicks and romantic comedies. These are not all bad (most of them are not good films, so sift through the poor ones by doing your research). But, if you prefer to kick back and enjoy a quality film that makes you think, here are five eclectic choices based on true stories. You will laugh, cry, and delve into deep thought. Enjoy!
1. "Straight Outta Compton" (2015)
This depiction of N.W.A's rise to the top of hip hop is simply incredible. The film is very well done from a cinematography perspective, as it guides the viewer through each shot allowing the focus to remain on the narratives of the main characters. You are destined to laugh from time to time as you are educated on the revolution that was hip hop in late 1980's America. If you want to feel a range of emotions and enjoy some good music, this is a must see.
2. "American Sniper" (2014)
Another great contemporary film, it is sure to bring you to your knees (if you have feelings). "American Sniper" highlights the life of Chris Kyle and his life as a Navy SEAL Sniper. The screenplay was written from the autobiography of the same name. Prepare yourself for a night in with a bag of tissues (just in case). This is not only critically acclaimed, but won an Academy Award for best sound editing (well deserved). See for yourself.
3. "Rush" (2013)
Ron Howard has directed quite a few great films but none like this. He admitted to having little to no knowledge of motor sports prior to filming "Rush". Despite this, he was able to bring the story of the most notorious Formula One racing rivalry to the silver screen. Chris Hemsworth turns in a phenomenal acting performance as James Hunt (the 1970's playboy of Formula One). Daniel Bruhl portrays Hunt's arch enemy, Niki Lauda. Bruhl was nominated for a Golden Globe for best supporting actor. The film was also nominated for Best Motion Picture Drama. Whether you are a car nut or not, this film has a lovely balance of romantic and race drama. Another must see film based on a true story.
4. "The Doors" (1991)
This is the second but equally as important film about a band on this list. Although it is titled after the band, The Doors, the film centers largely around Jim Morrison, and rightly so. Morrison was and remains to be one of the most influential artists of all time. Known as the American Poet, see Val Kilmer at his very best as he looks and acts a whole lot like Morrison himself. Both Chicago Film Critics Association Awards and MTV Movie Awards nominated Kilmer for Best Actor and Best Male Performance, respectively. Fan or not, do not skip this one. Many of life's questions are pondered in this film.
5. "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (1970)
This is the only non-contemporary film on the list, and for good reason. It is not outdated despite being made over 40 years ago. It depicts one of the most pivotal moments in American history. War buff or not, if you live in the United States and have not seen this film, I suggest you do. Tora means tiger in Japanese and was a radio code for "lightning attack." Showing the attack on Pearl Harbor from both perspectives, it is a riveting historical experience. The film won an Oscar for Best Special Effects. Though the special effects may be outdated, they were certainly ahead of their time. Give credit where credit is due. A must see when the time is right. Need I say more?
