5 Thinks We Hated Hearing Over Break

For every crazy family get-together, there are some dreadful questions we all hated hearing this past week.

We all have dreaded it, the big family get-togethers where family from all over the state come together and harass you about your life. Thanksgiving is just the pre-torture ritual, just wait till Christmas gets here. Here are 5 things we all heard this past thanksgiving that had us contemplating whether we could still call in and request to work.

1) "So, how is school going?"

As college students we always mentally prepare for this answer all year long. "Oh, how is school?" and we all answer "fine" or "It's good." However we are all thinking, "Well I am starving and sick of the school food, my roommate is annoying, I am possibly failing three classes and I have no money." So, when you are presented with this question at the next family reunion, say at Christmas, stick with the "it's fine" approach.

2) "How are your grades this semester?"

I think this picture is so relatable I want to cry. The moment you sit down at that table, your parents bombard you with this dreadful question. As the semester comes to a close, this question will be asked almost daily until you give them a solid answer. My advice, just stick with, "Oh they are fine, thanks." If they continue to ask for specifics, just make up an excuse to go to the bathroom.

3) When your parents ask if you have a boyfriend yet.

Ah, this lovely question. For the college students who are actually more focused on their education than their dating lives, this question absolutely drives us nuts. When my family or friends ask me this, I just respond with, "I don't have time to date, with school and everything." Just remember, not having that special person is perfectly ok!

4) When you get up for seconds and your parents ask you if you really need seconds.

The problem with Thanksgiving is the amount of food that is presented for us to eat. We all have that sense of insecurity and silently ask ourselves if we really need that extra buttered roll? The answer is yes, take that roll and enjoy it. Thanksgiving isn't the time or place for diets, this is a no judgment Holiday. Go back for seconds and even thirds. You will get no judgment from me.

5) When you pull out your homework and your parents ask you why are you being rude?

Life does not stop just because we are on Thanksgiving break. It's not uncommon for professors to assign homework over the extended break. And for those who get stuck with assignments from more than one professor, you have my sympathy. In some ways, homework is just a part of your everyday work schedule. If you don't do it, then you will fail. SO go ahead and whip that homework out and get your stuff done.

Overall, Thanksgiving can be just an annoyance but keep in my mind no matter how crazy your family may seem they mean well. Let me know what were some crazy questions you were asked from your family over Thanksgiving.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
