We’ve all been faced with a question about being stranded on a hypothetical island and only being able to bring three things. People usually decide to bring a phone or laptop or tablet or some other techy thing. However, they never consider the fact that they’ll be without electricity or any kind of signal. It’s essentially equivalent to bringing a rock that displays pretty pictures-- until it inevitably runs out of power, then it’s just like a rock. If we were to ever be put in this situation, it’s safe to say that many of us would be sitting on an island for an unknown amount of time with all of our technology and no food, water, or shelter. Here are some plausible things that you should elect to bring to the island, not only because they may help you escape, but because they will help you survive.
- Bottled water: Chances are, you won't want to drink the same water you use to wash your body. There are also probably lost of different bacteria and microscopic organisms that you won’t want to ingest. Saltwater is incredibly dangerous to drink and does not taste good. Bringing bottled water gives you fresh water to drink while you attempt to get off of the island and/or find another source of water.
- Fire source: Not all of us know how to build a fire out of kindling and wood. Bringing some sort of fire source can only work in your benefit. You’ll be able to build a fire for warmth or light or as a source of heat on which to cook your food. Lighting a fire may also attract attention of any people that are sailing or flying in the area of your island.
- Flare gun with flares: This may also help you to attract attention of anyone that may be near by. However, you’ll have to be careful with the flares because you only have a limited number of flares. It will especially be helpful if someone is near the island at night. Shoot a flare in the air and hopefully you’ll be saved.
- Knife: This has an abundance of uses. Not only can you use it to cut through tall foliage, but you can use it to protect yourself from animals that may be on the island and to kill food. Just think of all of the uses that knives have at your home where you have lots of other things at your disposal; on an island it’s more of a crucial tool.
- Sunhat/Clothes: This is simple, clothes can help prevent you from getting heatstroke. Hats are especially important for avoiding heat stroke, they directly protect your head. Wearing clothes will help keep you warm when the island gets cooler. It also ensures that you won't be naked when someone comes to save you.
