I have heard these hundreds of times and it's only my second year!

5 Things You Should Never Say to a Communications Major

“What are you going to be doing with that later on?”

I can do a lot with this major. Journalism, PR, broadcasting, advertising, human recourses, politics, should I go on? I don’t know exactly what I am going to do with my degree, but at least I will be able to have a ‘fun’ job.

“You are only majoring in it because it is easy.”

Okay sure, it is not the hardest-working major compared to a bio major, but I still need to study same as you. Getting a degree no matter what is hard work; it does not depend on the individual's major.

“Good luck being able to make money.”

Well, thanks, I guess. A communication job does not pay as highly as a doctor but at least there is more to life than just making money. The starting salaries may not be much, but they do grow with time and experience.

“Oh, you get to take a Social Media class.”

It’s not all fun and games; you actually have to study what people put on the internet and why it becomes so popular. And before you ask, no I do not have to study Kim Kardashian’s Instagram.

“Maybe I should take some of your classes to boost my GPA.”

This one bothers me the most. No! my classes are not "an easy way to boost your GPA." It takes just as much time as any other class and the homework is not as simple as you think.

If you think it is so easy, then you should be able to figure out how to boost your social media standing in just a few hours by creating a post in 140 characters or less.

From my fellow Communications majors and I, please remove these sentences from your vocabulary when speaking to us.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
