Even though I'm entering my Junior year of college, I can't help but open all the articles that say things like "15 Things You'll Need Freshman Year" or "Must Haves For College Freshmen." The lists usually include something like bath towels, throw pillows and a coffee maker. What almost none of them include is what you have to carry in yourself, not your suitcase.
1. You need to be yourself.
I know it sounds cheesy, but it's true. While college is a place to improve yourself and grow, it's not time to change your entire personality. You will find your people, even at a school of just under 4,000 students. While it's good to expand your music taste and try new foods and TV shows, don't try to be someone you're not. Being unique is something valuable in this world where people feel the need to conform. Stand firm in you.
2. You need courage.
The first few weeks can be a little overwhelming. There are new faces everywhere, you'll probably get lost multiple times the first week and most, if not all, of your friends are going to different schools. You will need to have lots of courage and boldness. Speak up in class, try out for Dance Guild, or just go down your hall and introduce yourself to the other people in your dorm first. If you don't, who will?
3. You need a passion.
I realized early on my freshman year that college is the perfect place to expand your interests and become truly passionate about something you already loved. Whether that's talking with fellow dorm-mates in the basement about the upcoming election, joining one of Calvin's many clubs focused on social justice, bringing up the need for better water in impoverished nations to your classmates, or attending a talk on women's involvement in the church, there is something for everyone. There are so many political views, nations, languages, denominations, and backgrounds represented at Calvin. Expand your mind, reach past your comfort zone, and get passionate about something!
4. You need to be patient with yourself and others.
Of course, conflict is going to happen. Your lab partner is going to 'forget' to do their portion of the assignment or your roommate is going to eat you last pop-tart-- and you are going to want to get angry. Just remember that sometimes you're the grouchy old cat, and sometimes you are the annoying little puppy. Have grace with people when they mess up, even if they don't return the favor. You will also need to be patient with yourself at times. You'll get lost on the way to your History class for the third time, forget to do your assignment until 10pm that's due at midnight, or be fed up with yourself. Cut yourself some slack and don't be afraid to ask for help!
5. You need to lean on God.
You need to trust God with everything you're going to go through this year. In the good times, in the bad times, in the confusing and the crazy times, always trust that God is holding you. When you fail your term paper, when your boyfriend breaks your heart, when your mental illness takes hold, trust God. He's there in the joy of a classmate, the hug from your RA, the care package your mom sends you. Look for Him, because He is looking out for you.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. - Proverbs 3: 5-6
This year is going to rock! Get out there and buy your notebooks and new comforter, but don't forget to just have fun and be yourself. You are going to be amazing.
