5 Things You Need To Know About The First Presidential Debate

Lies were told and rude comments were exchanged. How will we know who the best candidate is?

5 Things You Need To Know About The First Presidential Debate
ABC Local

Hi everyone! I'm sure many of you were watching the first of many presidential debates last night, and I have some thoughts about it that I wanted to share with you. I'm going to try not to let my personal political views get in the way here as I attempt to break down the debate. My goal here is to get you to read this (and watch the remaining debates) without any bias. I want to present you with some facts, and lies, that were told during the debate by both candidates. Honestly, I lost a little respect for both of them last night, so don't think I'm trying to convince you to vote one way or another.

1. Donald Trump could not stop interrupting Hillary Clinton.

Obviously, its kind of his trademark. He cuts people off to go on some sort of a rant and push his point of view as factual evidence. As I was watching the debate, all I could think about was how people actually believe his words as facts, a lot of his supporters don't even bother to fact check him to see how much truth his words actually hold. What annoyed me the most was that he interrupted her mostly just to belittle her and not actually add any valuable information to the question being answered.

2. Hillary Clinton came fully prepared with statements that Donald Trump has made in the past.

She did not hesitate to annihilate him when talking about his claims that climate change was a hoax, how his income tax plan would drive us further into debt, and how insane it was for him to ask our first Black president to present the world with his birth certificate. Yes, Trump had many things to say about Clinton as well, but they were mostly jabs at her that were not backed by factual evidence. How do you know that Clinton was telling the truth about his tax plan, and the fact that Trump has, on many occasions, called climate change a hoax? Well, regardless of who you support, you should definitely check out NPRs fact checker. They worked tremendously hard to make a transcript of the entire debate and fact check both of the candidates throughout the debate. It's a great resource to go to for an unbiased opinion of both candidates. You can check out their fact checker here.

3. Speaking of fact checkers...

Hillary Clinton said very early on in the debate that there was a live fact checker on her campaign website and she urged everyone to fact check both candidates (especially Trump). Trump told everyone to check his site for one as well, but there was no fact checker on his website.

4. "Stop and Frisk was ruled unconstitutional in New York because it largely singled out Black and Hispanic young men."

This was a statement made by Lester Holt during the debate. He said it in response to Donald Trump suggesting that stop and frisk should be implemented again, as it worked "very well in New York". After Holt reminded Trump that racial profiling was heavily used to determine who should be stopped and frisked Trump said, "No, you're wrong."

Sorry not sorry, but no, Trump, you're wrong! I think this was the last straw for me, I just couldn't take him seriously at all throughout the remainder of the debate. I couldn't stop thinking about how this privileged, rich white man refuses to acknowledge the FACTS about stop and frisk among other things. If he refuses to acknowledge that, then what other failed techniques will he try to bring back if he becomes president?

I have had the privilege of taking many criminal justice courses in college, the facts are plain and simple. Whether intentionally or not, police are taught to stop run down cars more often than nicer ones, they are told to be more wary of people dressed a certain way, and to be more cautious and alert in certain neighborhoods. It just so happens that certain people fit those descriptions more than others. This results in certain people (low-income minorities) making up most of the prison population.

Sorry bro, but I only have my bachelors degree thus far, and I definitely don't have billions of dollars worth of resources, yet I know this fact and you don't.....why??

Clinton even talked about this, a young black man will serve more time for the same crime committed as a young white man. And she's right. I liked that she acknowledged this, as Trump most definitely did not. But, Clinton shared her fair share of lies as well.

5. Clinton said, "I'm glad we're ending private prisons in the federal system."

Well Hillary (may I call you Hillary?), that's not entirely true. Thanks to NPR's nifty little fact checker, we can see that private prisons are not coming to an end. Yes, the bureau of prisons wants to rely on private prisons less, but the department of homeland security has not taken any action to sever ties with private prisons.

You may be wondering why I am pointing out more of Trump's mistakes than of Clinton's. Well, check that fact checker, because he made more mistakes than her. She definitely fibbed, but he flat out lied over and over again about the success of failed policies and the failure of successful policies.

Take it with a grain of salt, people. In my most honest opinion, neither candidate is the best for the presidency. However, I think one of them knows a thing or two about politics (what with being a politician and all) while the other likes to use bullying and fear tactics to gain support. (Honestly, all I hear is "na ne na ne boo boo you can't catch me!" every time he opens his mouth).

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
