Life is a wild ride, and often times it extremely overwhelming. While we cannot change many things about it, the most important thing we can change is our perspective of it. Often times all the weight put on our shoulders is self-inflicted. We overthink, overcomplicate, and over-exaggerate things that happen to us. In those instances, it is best to reflect on the situation and remember a few things:
1. Things will work out.
Things may not work out like you had planned, but they will work out. Life will get hectic and it will seem like things are falling apart at times. For instance, when I began college I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do and who I wanted to be. It's my second semester, and I have already changed my mind twice. Each and every day you are finding out new things about yourself and shaping who you will become. It's okay to not have it all figured out because you will. And when people tell you that you can be anything you want to be, you can. The most important thing to remember is that in life, you should not be anything less than happy.
2. This too shall pass.
As cliche as it is, there is so much truth behind this saying. This is something my mother always would tell me. When I was younger, I never thought much of the quote. Being that I am older now, I understand it's meaning. Whatever it is that is stressing you right now, it probably will not matter in 5 years.
3. It's okay to be a little selfish.
You know what is best for you, and that is what you should do. When it comes to your happiness, put yourself first-- not your parents, or your significant other, or your friends.
4. You matter, and you are loved.
It's common to feel isolated and alone sometimes. However, one thing is for certain: someone, somewhere loves you and cares about you. No matter who you are or what you're doing, you matter and you serve a purpose in this world. Someone is happy that you exist. I'm happy you're reading this, and I'm happy you are here.
5. You are not your mistakes.
This is a big one. I often have trouble remembering this one, knowing that I have made some extremely horrible mistakes in my life. Regardless of who you are, or what you have done, your mistakes do not make you who you are. Sure, you learn lessons from every mistake you have made, and sure, they may play a role in the person you are today. But they do not define you. You are a person, beautifully and wonderfully made. You are the only person that can define yourself, don't let others do it for you.
Life is one huge rollercoaster. There are ups, and there are downs. What defines your life is your attitude. You can choose to live your life miserably, or you can accept things as they come and know that it will be okay. Because it will be okay, and so will you.
