5 Things You Need to Make Time for During JMU Finals Week

As another JMU school year comes to a close, we all can’t help but have mixed emotions. On one hand you may feel like finals are slowly drowning you in a pool of your own flashcards, on the other hand, it’s important to remember that this is your last week of the school year. The last week to spend with your friends, wander around campus, and most importantly, the last week to enjoy JMU’s world-renowned dining services. Before you decide to lock yourself in ECL’s 24-hour room for the remainder of the week, here are five things you should really consider making some time for.

Use up the rest of your dining:

For those of us lucky enough to have a meal plan (and are not addicted to Starbucks coffee), chances are you have a pretty decent amount of dining left which, let this be your formal warning, DOES NOT roll over to next year. So do yourself & your parents a favor and go to either Mr. Chips, The Pod, or really anywhere that takes dining and buy all the food you can eat. And if you’re not the only one of your friends in this predicament, put all the food you get from your leftover dining together and have an end of the year feast (Disclaimer: this may only consist of candy, milkshakes, and boxes of easy mac, but at least it’ll make a good story)

Hang Out on the Quad:

Whether you’re just taking in some sunlight, picnicking with friends, stalking other people’s puppies, or even bringing your books outside to study in the light of day- do it. You won’t regret it.

Cheesy Thursday:

Be sure to make your last pilgrimage to E-hall this Thursday to experience the all you can eat grilled cheese. This staple of JMU culture is both not available in the real world nor is it socially acceptable to consume that much grilled cheese in one sitting. So before you leave for the summer, make sure to take advantage.

Take a Hike:

Haven’t made it off campus and into the mountains yet? Organize a hiking trip for your study break! Whether it’s waking up early to go see the sunrise or visiting a trail on Skyline Drive, a hike is not only the perfect study break, but the perfect way to end the year. If you’re looking for a great hike but don’t know a ton about hiking- here are a few beginner hikes that are guaranteed to make you forget about finals.

Hawksbill Summit, Skyline Drive

Stony Man Overlook, Skyline Drive

Humpback Rocks, Blue Ridge Parkway

Climb to the roof of ISAT:

If you haven’t already discovered it, the roof ISAT is the single most awesome spot on JMU’s campus. Around 6:30pm, grab some friends and make the trip up to the highest floor and and out onto the rooftop balcony to watch the sun set over all of JMU’s campus. It might take away from your study time, but when you’re sitting home this summer reflecting all the cool things you did this year, you’ll definitely be glad you did it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
