"What's your major?"
"Nursing."
"Oh, wow...good luck to you"
Story of my life.
From having many friends that are nursing majors and being one myself, you start to see some similarities amongst what you learn. Here are five things I've learned from being a Nursing Major:
1. Compassion.
The quote, “to be a good nurse, you have to understand both hearts” couldn't be more true. You have to have compassion and sympathy for people. You have to understand their feelings and really connect with them because usually, if they are seeing you, things aren't going well for them.
2. Family means everything.
Whether it's your family at home or your family at the hospital, you learn that they mean the world to you. You also learn to value your time with them because with this job, you miss a lot of family functions at home, and in time of need at work or at home, they have your back.
3. Time management.
I cannot stress enough how fast you learn this. From school work with tests, clinicals and projects to a slight social life, you realize 24 hours in a day really isn't enough time to get everything done.
4. Getting over a weak stomach.
I think you know why — it's definitely not for the faint of heart.
5. Organization.
There are some nurses out there who still struggle with this, but I can't emphasis how important this is to learn. You're gonna have a lot of patients and charting that you need to be able to keep straight and organized.
Those are just the five main ones I've learned over the years — there is plenty more that you learn. If you're a nurse, nursing major or thinking of majoring in nursing, I wish you all the luck. It's a long journey, but it's worth it in the end. We’re all in this together, and together we can get through it.
