5 Things You Heard Growing Up With The Name 'Fiona'

For the 1,000th time, I was not named after Princess Fiona.

There aren't that many of us that get blessed with being named Fiona. It's a very unique name to have since there aren't many of them (or at least in the United States). In fact I only personally know two others and know of one other named Fiona. Whenever I meet another Fiona, I am always excited, but all of those Fionas are younger than me. You see, growing up with the name Fiona, people are always referencing the "Shrek" movies and wondering if that is how I got my name. But "Shrek" did not come out until May 18, 2001, so anyone born after that date might have been named after Princess Fiona, but anyone born before then was probably not. I am one who was not. I was born in the late '90s and was named Fiona because of my Celtic heritage. In fact, when I was born, the nurses thought my parents were naming me after Fiona Apple — they were not though.

1. "This is not your swamp."

OK, seriously why would it be my swamp? Please tell me, 'cause I have no idea why it would be my swam

2. "Ogres have layers."

OK, so this one might have some truth behind it. I mean everyone has layers — some we let others "see" and others we keep to ourselves. But why did you have to bring ogres into this statement?

3. "Were you named after Princess Fiona?"

Although it is cool to be named after someone, whether fictional or not, actually no I was not named after Princess Fiona. Like I said before, I was born before "Shrek," so I was not named after something that came out after I was born

4. Jokes about not being able to be out in public after dark.

Seriously, I ask you why? Obviously I'm not an ogre; you've seen me after dark before. I go out at all times of the day

5. "Did you grow up in a tower?"

Yeah, 'cause there's a tower for every girl/woman named Fiona. Have you looked at your surroundings? I'm pretty sure you can't see a tower. Also, if I am remembering correctly, Princess Fiona never left the tower until she was rescued by Shrek. I went to school every day of my life.

Although most of us named Fiona were not named after the movie "Shrek," we do love it dearly. 'Cause finally there were things we could buy at the store with our name on it. We thank "Shrek" and DreamWorks for that!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
