Being snapped at to get our attention:
- -And I do quite literally mean being snapped at… Or clapped at, whistled at, or yelled to from across the dining hall. I see that you have finished your food a whopping 2 minutes ago, but I do have other customers to attend to, along with answering phones and taking down takeout orders at the front counter. You are not the only person here, and seeing as I’ve been waiting on you for about 30 minutes now it’d be nice to get a little respect with it.
When men make it clear that your tip is going to be based on how well you flirt with them:
- -This is probably one of the grossest things I’ve dealt with while being in the waitressing game. I’ve had a guy literally have his pen to the paper, about to write in how much he is going to tip me, then ask me a flirty question followed by, “come on, I’m writing your tip now, what’s the answer going to be?” with a stupid, what he thinks is cute, smirk on his face. How about you leave no money and just get out of here? That’d be a fine tip to me!
Customers lying to get free food, followed by you getting in trouble for it:
- -There have been too many times that a customer has either lied about me taking their order wrong or a fellow worker taking their order wrong just in order to receive free food from the restaurant for a compensation of our “screw up”. The food usually really isn’t that expensive that you should be willing to risk getting us in trouble, or even fired for a free meal, and if it is- go somewhere else.
People staying past closing or coming in before the restaurant even opens:
- -Coming in before the restaurant opens is only rude in the sense that I was only halfway through prepping myself to make it through the shift, and you came in way earlier than I was ready. However, staying past the time the restaurant closes, is just straight up obnoxious. And I am not talking about five or ten minutes past, I am talking about twenty minutes or more. I once had these two girls, who had already been there since about eight o’ clock, stay until almost an hour past closing (aka eleven o’ clock at night) on a Saturday night. I’m sorry, but I’ve been running around serving people since four in the afternoon and I’d really like to go home and eat, sleep, and get ready for tomorrow’s brunch shift! And I mean come on, we started putting the chairs on the tables, can you really not take that big of a hint that we’d like you to leave? Also, if you walk into a restaurant right before opening or right before closing and ask, "is it okay if we come in now?" it's probably not, but we're not allowed to say no! Just use your head and put yourselves in our shoes!
Being yelled at by the customer when their food comes out wrong, when it was the chef's mistake- not yours:
- -This really adds a great amount of stress to the overall job, because sometimes the chef misreads our handwriting, or just genuinely makes the food wrong/badly all on his/her own, and that is not our fault! It is the waiter/waitresses job to write down the order, bring it to the kitchen, and bring the food to the table. I did not make the food, so don’t yell at me if your steak is cooked more than I told them to cook it- go to the back, and yell at the chefs!
