5 Things To Remember This Recruitment Season

As sorority recruitment season approaches, I feel blessed that I went through this process last year and found my home away from home. Now, I am a year in as an active member in a sorority and I am about to experience recruitment from the other side of things. All of Greek life has been working hard to perfect their house’s presentation for recruitment, and I am nothing but excited to be a part of such a cohesive collaboration. As I reminisce on last year, there are some things I learned through recruitment that can be helpful for those about to go on this journey to find their place in the Greek community.

1. Be Yourself

The house that you will be happiest in is the one that will fully accept who you are. There’s no need to act like anyone else! There’s only one YOU and she’ll make a great fit in the ideal house for her. Let everyone see how great, unique and REAL you are.

2. Stay Positive

Everything happens for a reason. I know that I called my mom crying in anxiety a few times last year during recruitment, but I realize now how silly that was. Some houses just aren’t meant to be, and it is for the best to move forward in excitement with each round.

3. Keep an open mind

The Greek community works hard to make sure the rush process goes as smoothly as possible, so keep an open mind and don’t judge too harshly during the week. Some houses may not be your cup of tea and that’s okay. However, there is no reason to think less of that organization just because they may not be your favorite.

4. Follow your heart

During this process your rush group or close friends will want to talk about each other’s opinions after each round. However, this may not be the smartest decision because others may influence you to drop a house that would be a perfect fit for you. Keep your time recruiting personal and follow your gut instincts. You will end up in the perfect place for you.

5. Trust the process

I know that I was skeptical about how this all works, but I found where I was meant to be in the end. Recruitment is a mutual selection- the sorority you end up in will pick you and you will pick them. Trust yourself and the system and everything will be fine!

Good luck to those going through recruitment this fall. I hope you find your home away from home.

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?

For the average 20-something, life moves pretty fast. You’ve got classes, friends, relationships, jobs, family, and whatever else we overcommit ourselves with. I probably should have learned to say no to adding more to my schedule a long time ago, but instead here are 11 things that can be more helpful than coffee.
