Being a music major is full of surprises. Some are a pain, but it all pays off in the long run. Here are just a few of the things you should expect if you're deciding on being a music major.
1. Say goodbye to free time.
Okay, even if you do get an hour or two of free time, you'll probably just try and take a nap. You're going to need to balance you're time between classes, homework, whatever extracurricular activities you might be doing, eating, and sleep, with LOTS of practicing. The practice rooms are now you're best friend.
2. You're going to meet A LOT of new people.
This might be scary to some people, but it's one of the upsides to being in music. There are a lot of other people involved in music, even though they might not be a music major themselves. But basically, you'll always have someone to talk to. Everyone is super welcoming and it's pretty amazing.
3. Music Theory just might be as hard at Rocket Science.
Okay, this might be an exaggeration... But be ready to actually put time into this class. To a lot of people, Theory is a completely new subject coming into the class and that makes it a lot harder to grasp some of the concepts. Just keep in mind that it is definitely doable and it's going to make you a way better musician once you actually DO understand. Keep on studying.
4. Your musical skills will improve dramatically, and quickly.
Even in the first week I noticed so much improvement. Sight-reading, tone, even the nerves of playing/singing in front of people declined. It just goes up from there. There's always something to practice so you can improve more.
5. And finally, it's a lot of fun, even though most of us complain the whole time.
Don't let the complaining discourage you. IT IS ALL WORTH IT. Being around others that are passionate about music makes everything so much better. There is lots of joking around, bonding, and all of it happens while being around music.
