5 Things To Do Your First Week Of College

A couple tips for the freshman who has no clue what to do!

A lot of college freshmen are either already moved in, or are moving in and while most of them would like to believe they know what they're doing, the truth is that they don't have a clue. So here are a few things that are a must to do during your first week!

1. Go to all the cheesy events they put on the first week of school.

A lot of freshmen try to act like they're 'too cool' to go to the welcome events that their college puts on, but I think it's just because they're scared. Chances are if you go to that pizza party mixer, tie-dye event, welcome back basketball game or one of the other 50 events that they have going on you're bound to meet one person that you get along with and like. And when you go to a large college and don't know many people, just one person can make all the difference.

2. Actually show up to all of your classes.

Trust me when I say professors notice those of you who go to class (unless you're in a big lecture hall that is). Most professors even take attendance the first couple weeks of school, and if they notice that you aren't showing up for classes they may boot you out of the class!

3. Meet all the people on your hallway (including your R.A.)

While you're probably not going to like everyone on your hallway, it is a good idea to at least meet all of them considering you'll be living in the same vicinity for quite a while. This goes for your R.A. too! As much as most people would love for you to believe that your Resident Assistant is out to get you, they're students just like you, and enjoy when a resident doesn't cower in fear at the sight of them!

4. Make a plan to be organized and stick to it.

The great downfall of college freshman: Having all this newfound freedom and not knowing what to do with it. Get a planner and schedule study, gym, and sleeping times! Most freshmen have no idea how to make a schedule and stick to it, and that tends to mess up their sleeping patterns and make them late to early morning classes. Establishing these schedules early will help you in the long run when projects, papers, and finals start to appear!

5. Actually call your parents and tell them how you're doing.

Don't lie you know you miss your parents just as much as they miss you. I actually have a group chat between me and my parents, and I send them random pictures throughout the week of crazy things I saw, meals I ate, or things that I got to go do. It makes you feel a little more connected to them even if you are far away, and helps both you and them with the separation.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
