I recently returned from an internship in Orlando, Fla. When I told people where I would be spending my summer, they never failed to ask one question: are you going to Disney World? The answer is yes; however, I am happy to say that after spending two months in The City Beautiful, I have experienced amazing places other than "the happiest place on earth." So allow me to be your tour guide and tell you about the many other attractions you can enjoy on your next trip down to Orlando.
1. Lake Eola
Lake Eola is located right in the heart of downtown Orlando. Around its perimeter is a nice path where you can go walking or running and gaze at the swans and ducks that inhabit the lake. There's even a small amphitheater that hosts various shows and artists. And in the middle of the lake is the fountain, which has become Orlando's symbol.
2. Jungle Adventures
When non-Floridians think of Florida, they think of sunshine, oranges and beaches. Well, natural Florida is not like that. Jungle Adventures allows you to see untouched Florida swamps and experience Florida wildlife. You can float by alligators, hold living Florida wildlife (like snakes, tarantulas and a baby alligator) and watch alligators being fed. Basically, you're going to be surrounded by alligators.
3. Disney Springs / Downtown Disney
OK, it's a stretch, but Disney Springs definitely has a different vibe from Disney World. You can go in and out of shops at Disney Springs, get some dinner, eat awesome dessert and wrap up your night with a nice show in their amphitheater. It's a fun place to be when you don't feel like just sitting in your house for the night.
4. ZOOMAIR Adventure Park
At ZOOMAIR, you can experience high and low ropes courses, as well as zip lining. Enjoy team building with your family and friends, and take in the view from high above.
5. Orlando Pride Game
I actually didn't go to the game, but my friends who did go continued referring to the game as the most fun activity during their whole time in Orlando. My one friend said, "It was a part of the trip where I felt that I was truly connected to the whole city of Orlando."
I am happy to say that when I think of Orlando, I am no longer going to think of a place filled with castles, spinning teacups and a smiling mouse. Rather, when I think of Orlando, I will think of great memories and the wonderful company that shared those experiences with me.
