5 Things to Do in College Besides Party

You can still have fun, I promise.

It seems like college kids spend most of their time studying and partying. Between tailgates, frat parties, smoking, and all-you-can-drink nights, it seems like there is nothing to do besides sit at home or join the crowd. I love to have fun, but my idea of fun does not line up with the mainstream college culture's idea of fun. For those of you who like a cleaner experience, here are five things to do besides part in college.

1. Go to on-campus events

While every college is different, most colleges do use our tuition to fund super fun traditions and events throughout the semester. At the University of South Florida, we have movie night every Wednesday, Bulls Nite Out every other Friday, Bull Market during the day, and a clean tailgate run by the student government. Check out what your campus has to offer through your school's website, student government, and campus activities board.

2. Go to the movies or bowling

Local movie theaters and bowling alleys typically have deals for students of nearby colleges, including discounted tickets, food, games, and shows. Check with your local theaters and alleys to see if any deals are offered to you!

3. Attend sporting events for the sports (or join intramurals)

Like I said earlier, student government often hosts a clean tailgate that has sodas and BBQ food at the football games. You can also attend football, baseball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and tennis games just for the fun of the sport! You can also participate at a less-intense level through intramural sports.

4. Join clubs and organizations relating to your major or interests.

Many colleges have hundreds of student organizations. From writer clubs to video game clubs to animal clubs to make-up clubs, there is a place for everyone. Check out markets and fairs that advertise the different student organizations on campus.

5. Take time to yourself

Social interaction is important, but so is self-care. Take time for yourself to work out, swim, take a nap, read a book for fun, invest in your religion, invest in your appearance… whatever makes you happy!

As someone who doesn't like to party, I find comfort in these activities. I hope the same goes for you, my dear reader!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
