- Read a book
- If you’re already a book worm then this option is definitely for you. Reading books is a great way to de-stress as well as a chance to navigate through unknown worlds where your imagination can fly free. One of my favorite books is “The Illustrated Man” by Ray Bradbury. This book is composed of eighteen short stories all shown through the tattoo’s a of a man covered in them. The nature of this book is to analyse technology vs the human psychological thinking process. I love this book because it gives me a chance to analyse the deeper meaning hidden within each short story. So, if you find yourself looking for something to do, be proactive and read a book. There is always a book for every persons taste.
- Begin Coloring
- A popular way to relax your mind is to begin coloring. Woodbury University organizes an event that offers pop-up coloring sessions during the week of finals. This is a great way to unwind all the stress you’ve accumulated. Coloring to de-stress is basically just that. You can either print a page, buy a coloring book, or color online. I find that it works best when you have music playing in the background. Also, it’s quite fun to splash bright colors all in one page. The result completely satisfies that feeling of accomplishment.
- Laugh
- Seriously, laugh. Go out, socialize, visit places, anything that will get you to laugh is a yes. Laughing is a great way to become relaxed and to enjoy some free time. Live like Dr. Seuss said “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory” You only live once, might as well make it a good one filled with laughter and joy.
- Take a Walk
- Whether you’re athletic or lazy like me, walking is a good way to clear your mind. Also, walking helps maintain your body healthy and open to new ideas that might be useful to you later in life. I commute on a daily basis, so walking is a crucial part in my routines. Walking has helped me see the world with a new perspective. There are things you see while walking that no movie or phone can compete with. Walking really does help a person expand their thoughts and de-stress from all the problems they have.
- Volunteer/Community Service
- Often we hear that community service looks good in resumes and that’s true. However helping our communities or schools is something that we should all be doing regardless of the outcome it may have on us. If you find yourself having some free time over the weekend or after class, you should visit an animal shelter, or plant some trees for your community. Some schools offer beautification events where you can help plant trees, decorate buildings, and pick up trash. Whatever type of volunteer service you do, it’s a great way to be more proctive.
