Being a senior in college can be absolutely terrifying. Your mind is constantly barraged by questions about the future, and you have tons of extra responsibilities to take care of in order to graduate. But before you get sucked into the anxiety-inducing spiral of doom and gloom, take a moment to do these five things:
1. Stop and breathe.
You have made it this far. You have survived three and a half semesters of school. You can do this. Every time you get overwhelmed, take a second to breathe. Clear your mind, focus in on your goal, and then go achieve it to the best of your ability.
2. Thank the people who have helped you get to this point.
Thank your professors. Thank your friends. Thank your family. Thank the third grade teach who originally sparked your interest in your current major! Take a moment to thank the people who helped you get to where you are now. Not only will it take you on a fun trip down memory lane, but it will help solidify and forge relationships with the people in your life. It feels good to hand out some gratitude.
3. Remember how far you've come.
This point is a little redundant if you've completed the first two steps, but it is so important it must be reiterated! Think about all the adversity you have faced and how you have overcome it. Think of everything that could have knocked you down and how you got right back up. You will feel less anxious about the future when you have fully realized just how powerful and resilient you are.
4. Take advantage of your resources.
Attend career fairs. Go to career services and have them proof your resume. Ask professors for recommendation letters. Do the work now so you don't have to panic about not having a job in May.
5. Treat yourself.
You have worked SO hard. You have struggled. You have been overwhelmed. You have pulled all-nighters, done embarrassing things in front of strangers, failed reading quizzes, aced important exams, made friends, broke up with romantic partners, formed relationships with professors, and learned about yourself. You are about to graduate college. That is an accomplishment you should never forget.
Congratulations! And don't forget to buy your cap and gown.
