Oh, how I love animals, especially when they are small. But that doesn't mean I would ever take one back if they got bigger. You are their pack, their family, and their entire world. So, in light of horrid habits that happen every year, such as giving the animal to a shelter just because it grew up, here are a few things to do before you make that big decision.
1. Research the animal you are interested in
DO NOT naturally assume you know everything about the breed after seeing a single picture. Every animal has certain conditions it needs to stay alive and thriving, as well as additional attachments. And the pet store expert? Sometimes they are just trying to make you spend money. Know before you buy.
2. Make sure that everyone is aware the animal will grow up
Kittens, puppies, and small versions of anything are adorable. But they become adults just like we do. Don't buy if you'll end up giving them away because they were 'too big' or 'too loud'. Understand, as well as explain that the animal will grow up. Back to point one you go.
3. Stress responsibility
An animal is not a doll and should not be treated as an object. They have needs and it's your job as an owner to make sure that they are met. Exercise, food at least three times a day, water, fun, and love are all necessary components to keeping your pet healthy and happy.
4. Know the possible medical problems
Just because they are cute does not mean that there will not be health problems. Each one has possible issues, especially mixed breeds. Know this before you figure out what the new addition will be to the family.
5. Make sure you have time for them
Again, they are not dolls. Just like you need your friends and family, they need theirs also. Sticking high contact animals in a crate, or ignoring them, is not love. Invest in a low contact animal if you know you won't have much time for something that requires more energy. Maybe a pet rock?
Adopt! Don't Shop. Thousands of animals need good, loving homes.
