I am a sophomore, so a year ago I was in the shoes of the hundreds of potential new members I see going through recruitment currently. I went through each house like they are, wide-eyed, thinking each of the women I talked to was the embodiment of perfection. Now that I'm on the other side, I have seen the work that goes into recruitment, and not all of it is as effortless as it seems.
1. The entrance is a rehearsed masterpiece.
For us, stairs are the most practiced item during spirit week. And I thought they just floated down in sync.
2. The active members are just as nervous to talk to the PNM's as they are to talk to the actives.
What if we scare them away? What if I'm the reason they don't like my
sorority?
3. There are a lot of rules.
The PNM always gets the rails on the stairs. The PNM always is on your right. Don't let the PNM leave with a water cup, etc, etc.
4. Not wearing your letters out is hard.
All those t-shirts you practically live in are a no-go during recruitment.
5. It takes all of your time for approximately two weeks, but you'll be totally okay with it.
You get to talk with
sisters you don't usually speak with, and you get to spend time with the upperclassmen that are usually MIA during the semester. It's a long week, but it'll be one of your favorites.
