5 Things That Should Be On Your Bucket List

The majority of people I know have a bucket list of some sort. Some take theirs seriously and have detailed plans for their goals, while for others it is mostly a list of whims. As a result, we all have a slightly different version of a bucket list, with the goals being the same. The ultimate goal of a bucket list is to get the most out of life that we possibly can. Here are the five things that I found to be the most important on my bucket list.

1. Traveling outside the country

It can be easy to get caught up in our every day lives and the minor aspects of them that we deal with every day. Traveling outside the place you're used to, and know so well, can open your mind to the rest of the world. Experiencing different cultures and histories is important because it makes us aware of how many different kinds of people and places exist and it proves to us that the world is a lot bigger than it seems. It can also be motivational to step outside your world and realize how much more we can do.

2. Own pets

Owning pets is important for several reasons. The one we most commonly hear is that, by taking care of a pet, we learn responsibility. While that's important, there's nothing quite like coming home after a long, difficult day and being greeted by your pet who is overjoyed to see you. They don't care about many of the things that people do, so you're always guaranteed to have one constant companion and supporter. They're also soft and fuzzy, which is a bonus.

3. Explore your family history.

With over seven billion people in the world, we all have a unique story. With that comes a unique history of our own lives and where we came from. Exploring the origin of your family and the lives of your ancestors is interesting because everything they did and accomplished has led to your own existence, and the world as we know it today.

4. Conquer your biggest fear

Conquering whatever it is that you're scared of most can be extremely fulfilling and help you grow as a person. Whether you're scared of heights, flying, being alone or something completely different. Working to face your fear should be on your bucket list.

5. Doing what you love rather than what you 'should'

Our society causes us to make decisions that we don't always want to make because it's what we "should" do. This can apply to working in a field we don't want to be in, because it's more likely to make us successful, or living somewhere that's more practical. While these things should be considered in making decisions, it's important to do what you love because that is more likely to make you happy.

Bucket lists are important because it is a visual of our goals. It gives us something to work toward. These five items on my bucket list are what I consider to be important. Each person has different goals, but the end goal is the important part.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
