There's not too much in this world that is as passive and satisfactory as nostalgia. It's a feeling that makes you giddy, a time-machine back to when things were different. So, here are some of the things that ignite those feelings of nostalgia in me.
1. Going to the zoo.
To any kid, the zoo is an enchanting place and for me it remains just the same. Day-trips with my family are well ingrained into my memories of childhood. My girlfriend absolutely loves going to the zoo as well, so we try to go at least a couple times a year when the weather is good.
2. Playing Runescape.
For those of you who don't know what Runescape is, it's an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) that started back in the early 2000s. My brother and I used to play it incessantly, and even now, we'll putz around every once in awhile just to see what has changed. If I hear certain songs from the band, Atreyu, the same nostalgia flares up because my brother would listen to that music while we played.
3. Picking out a pumpkin or Christmas tree.
Both of these have always been a family event, especially picking out the Christmas tree. Pumpkins are individual, subjective, but the Christmas tree is a group effort. Everyone needs to decide on how tall, how wide, and how sufficiently full the tree needs to be. It's a science.
4. Eating a home cooked breakfast.
I must specify here, for it can't be just any breakfast that just so happens to be home cooked. No, it needs to be cream chipped beef on toast, or sausage, biscuits, and gravy. My father used to make one or the other all the time. It sure is good to wake up on a Saturday morning with that waiting for you.
5. Seeing the oldest of friends.
Before my older brother was born there were a group of expecting parents that got together, ours included, and socialized. More than 24 years later we all still keep in contact with each other. These are my parents's oldest friends and my brother and I's oldest friends. The first-borns grew alongside each other just as the second-borns, while the parents looked on in joy. Whenever these friends are seen there is much recalling of days gone by and of what we did when we were little. Living, breathing nostalgia they are.
There, those are the five things that get me excited with nostalgia. What makes you giddy with remembrance? Stay sane, my friends.
