Dear Tuscaloosa,

When we say this, we mean it from the bottom of our hearts — you are the college town of our dreams. We couldn't be more grateful to live here 9 months out of the year. But, you are not completely perfect. You have your flaws, but they can be fixed. To be more perfect than you already are, these additions listed below would make our college town a 10/10. So please, help us out, preferably before we graduate.

Sincerely,

UA students

1. A Bagel Shop

I cannot stress this enough- Tuscaloosa NEEDS a wide variety NYC style bagel shop ASAP! Sober or hungover, a New York style bacon, egg, and cheese bagel is good for the soul (throw some hot sauce on that!)

2. A To-Go Salad Shop

And for those of us who are healthy and constantly on the go, a to-go salad shop is everything we could ask for. Having a wide variety of lettuce, toppings, dressings, and chicken and avocado for an extra dollar or two would satisfy our craving for some greens.

3. A Yoga, Pilates, and Spin Studio

Fortunately, Tuscaloosa does have a Pure Barre studio, which has been such a great option for students to take classes beyond doing their normal work out routine at the recreational center. Pure Barre is a full body workout that utilizes the ballet barre to perform small isometric movements set to fun, upbeat music. But, I know that there are plenty of students in need of a yoga, pilates, and spin studio. Everyone likes what they like, and Pure Barre isn't everybody's thing! Thus, Tuscaloosa needs a yoga, pilates, and spin studio that allows you to get a membership or take individual classes.

4. A Fresh Sushi Restaurant

For those of us who come from out of state (I'm looking at you California residents,) you are used to fresh, fantastic sushi. I think we can all agree on the fact that most of the sushi restaurants in Tuscaloosa are just not doing this for us. Every sushi lover is in need of a good dragon roll every once in a while, and it is hard to satisfy that craving here.

5. A Lululemon Store

It is obvious while walking around campus premises that our student body wears a lot of Lululemon. Although we have the luxury of ordering Lululemon online straight to our front door, it would be nice to have a Lululemon store in Tuscaloosa with a great selection of sizes and styles. The nearest Lululemon store is in Birmingham, which can be quite inconvenient for us Lululemon lovers at UA!

6. An Apple Store

Safe to say that college students break their phones and other electronics more than anyone else. I swear, my friends break their iPhones every other weekend. When Verizon or AT&T cannot help, driving to the nearest Apple store in Birmingham isn't always the most convenient. Please hear us out Apple, we need one of your stores in Tuscaloosa. With all our broken phones and problems, we would keep your store lights on, I promise.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
