5 Things I Don't Tell My Sister Enough

It's time to let our sisters know how much we appreciate them.

5 Things I Don't Tell My Sister Enough

1. "Your brutal honesty is appreciated more than you know."

Oftentimes, people feel intimidated by me and never know how to tell me what they TRULY think, but not you. You never fail to tell me when I am wrong and you never tell me when I am right, probably because I rarely am. Somehow, you are always right and have the ability to make me see that I DON’T know it all.

2. "You're a warrior."

Seriously, you are. So many people lose themselves in marriage, raising kids or in life itself, but you always hold your own. You have never lost who you are, nor are you ever embarrassed to be yourself, even if that means being a big nerd. I admire that you love yourself enough to care about things that are important to YOU no matter what happens in life.

3. "You're the best mom."

Thank god, because you are raising my niece and nephew. But seriously, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that you would go to the ends of the Earth to make your kids smile. You teach them patiently, love them unconditionally and take them to Disney once per month. I mean, every child must wish that you were their mom. Most of all, you sacrifice yourself in order to better the lives of your children and I thank you for raising my niece and nephew so beautifully.

4. "Thank you for being the BEST big sister."

I know that our sisterly relationship is far from perfect, but you truly are the best. You never fail to give me the best advice and without ever actually saying the words, I know that I am welcome to come to you whenever I’m in need. Thank you for always letting me know you’re on my side.

5. "I love you."

I don’t only love you because we share the same bloodline, I love you because you’re a genuinely kind person. You’re one of those people that you don’t come across often in life, but when you do come across that kind of person, you know you’ve met someone special. You’re one of those people that takes pride in gifting someone the perfect, personal present. You’re one of those people that is selflessly there for their friends at the drop of a hat, expecting nothing in return. You are the kind of person that I strive to be one day and I love you for inspiring me to be better.

When it comes to family, we sometimes forget how blessed we are to be related to such amazing people. So, big sister, I want you to know: that even though I may not say these things enough, I think them every time I think of you.

Thank you for being my big sister.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
