5 things that are positive in my life
Katheryn Byrnes

I hate. This article started off as a list of things that I hate about my body and myself. As I was thinking of how to start this I realized that the negative is too easy to focus on and too common for people to focus on. So instead I wanted to focus on the good. I am writing about what I love about my body and myself because with every negative comes the positive and if we only focus on the negative than we will become negative our self. It is time to focus on the positive: the positive in life, positive of your life, the positive of your body, and who you are.

1. My Growing Muscles

I have recently gotten back into working out and instead of doing it to lose weight I am doing it to get toned and gain muscles. Yes, it takes patience. Yes, it takes hard work. Yes, it takes time. But I have been able to gain muscles easier than I thought. My ability to lift weights for a long period of time, to see the difference in my arms, and to add weight more frequently took me by surprise. I did not think that ability was going to happen so quickly and I was shocked when it did.

2. My Ability to Travel

I am lucky. I currently live in Thailand and I am able to travel around Thailand and to surrounding countries (I jet off to Bali later tonight). I have always loved traveling and I have gotten lucky to live in a place that makes traveling that much easier.

3. My Job in Thailand

I am a teacher in Thailand and this job brings me great joy and happiness. I have the ability to shape and help young minds. I can show them parts of the western culture that they can't get in movies and TV shows. I can educate them on the proper ways of the English language. I am able to watch them grow and grown along side them. Teaching in Thailand has been so much fun. I have influenced students, learned things about myself, and experienced new cultures.

4. My Patience

This is something that I have struggled with for awhile-patience. Patience is now something that I have and with it, I am able to wait for things to happen and for the results that I wish for.

5. My Ability to See the Good in Things

I love seeing the good in things because I then go through the world happy. Seeing the good in the world allows me to be happy and lets me find the bright side in negative situations. Seeing the good in things makes me a more positive person and happier in general.

It is easy to find the negative, the bad, and the things that you hate but it is hard to find the positive. I challenge you to find some positive things in your life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
