5 Things You Don't Tell Your Parents Often Enough

They need to hear this!

5 Things You Don't Tell Your Parents Often Enough

Being away from your parents while you're away at school is hard for everyone. It's just as hard for you as it is for them. You are learning to live on your own and to complete tasks that they used to do for you, like grocery shopping and doing the laundry. You being away is hard for them simply because they miss you! They're proud to see you grow up, but it's hard for them to watch sometimes. While you're away, you don't always talk to them every day, and they miss that. There are a few things you haven't said to them in a while and a few things they need to hear.

1. We miss you.

As much as it seems like we don't come home often enough, we do miss you more than you know. Even though we like to talk about what's going on here at school, we still like to hear about what's going on at home, and we do miss it. We like it when you keep us in the loop about what's happening around town, and we want you tell us all about the things going on with you guys.

2. We're doing okay.

School is going pretty well. Classes are easier this semester, but that won't lead to us slacking off like usual. Well, not yet, at least; we are only a few weeks into the semester. Yes, we're keeping up on our laundry... seriously this time, and the bedroom is kind of clean for once.

3. It's a good thing that we like school.

We used to hate it, and that made you so sad. Now, we love it, and that makes you sad too. Just because we like school doesn't mean that we don't like coming home just as much.

4. Yes, we still need you.

We'll always need you. As much as we like to pretend we're independent and can live on our own, we still need your help. We still don't know how to do most everyday tasks and we'll still call you every time we need help with car trouble and confusing bank statements. And to borrow money, of course. Thank you or always saying yes to that.

5. We're thankful.

We might not say it often enough, but we know that we owe you the world. Thank you for getting us ready and encouraging us to go to school in the first place. And thank you for helping us stick it out through the tough times. Thank you for helping us when you know we need it, but also stepping back to let us make a few mistakes of our own.

Living on our own is hard and is such a bittersweet time for all of us. Thank you for putting up with us and for understanding what we're going though, even when we don't understand it ourselves. Thank you for always being our biggest supporters; we appreciate it more than anything in this world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
