5 Things On My Summer To-Do List in Indiana

The Indianapolis area is so full of things to do and summer provides even more unique things that relate only to this area and some things that you can't find anywhere else. Sure, there are certain things that I could do in other areas, but the Indianapolis experience makes things just a little bit more fun.

1. Indy 500

This is an Indianapolis only event and a perfect way to start off the summer. And the thing is, it isn't just an event, it is an experience. This unique fun day of race cars, concerts, rednecks, and drinking. It is something you can't even explain to people. There are cars moving at over 230 mph and thousands of people in the infield of this 2.5 mile track and even more sitting in the stands. All for a 3-4 hour racing event. When people from foreign countries hear that I am from Indiana, this is the first things they ask about. It is an event known all across the world.

2. Time at the lake

There are lakes all across the state of Indiana. Most people spend times at lake houses with friends or family at some point. There is something about hanging out in a crystal clear lake and being able to watch fish swim below you. There is wakeboarding, skiing, kayaking, and just laying out on the boat. There are days where you can do it all and days where you can lay on the dock with the warm sun shining on you and be happy.

3. Indianapolis Indians Game

Sure, Indianapolis isn't a huge baseball city, but if you're looking for a cheap way to watch baseball, this is it. Seats are cheap and it just gives you something to do on a warm summer evening. You can either buy seats or get a group of friends to go and sit in the lawn area.

4. Shipshewana Flea Market

This is another Indiana experience. In northern Indiana, smack in the middle of Amish Country is a the Midwest's Largest Flea Market. Yep, you read that right. I know this may not seem all that fun, but it is great. You can buy all sorts of modern things that you may need, but also get a taste of the handcrafted Amish-made things being sold by Amish people. They also sell homemade and homegrown food and its free to get in. What is better than that?

5. Indiana State Fair

This is how you end your summer. The Indiana State Fair has something for everyone. There is something for those interested in fair rides and carnival games, food, concerts, and 4H competitions. This event usually takes place for a couple weeks with different events throughout. I can engorge with fatty carnival food all while riding rides, then end my night with a headliner concert. It's the best way to finish out a summer off.

Although Indiana may seem like a boring place to most, there are some things I would miss if I ever moved away. These summer events are always on my to-do list and help make my summer fun and relaxing.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
