The modeling world has really blown up with the invention of Instagram. It is getting easier and easier for people to get recognized through the social media app but modeling is more than just taking a photo and looking good. There are a lot of misconceptions about what modeling is.
1. You have to model more than in your mirror
Yeah, I said it. Those are cute and all but if that is all your posing for - you are not a model.
2. When you get a photographer for the first time, don't expect to be paid.
This is probably the biggest problem with new models. Unless you are already represented by someone, you will probably not get paid on your first shoot. Why? You haven't learned how to model yet. Being pretty will not just cut it. Why would a photographer pay to take pictures of someone inexperienced when they can get other people inexperienced for free? If a really good photographer is willing to work TFP (time for print or trade shoot) which is really a free shoot for both, then I say don't even bring up money. Don't mess it up for yourself.
3. You don't need to be naked
If you are comfortable showing skin, that all the power to you but there are plenty of people willing to work within your comfort zone. It is also good to think of a market you want to hit weather it is just solely fashion, fitness, lingeries, swimsuit, artistic, glamour, makeup, ect. And gear your portfolio towards that. And yes, you can always dip into different genres but you do not have to pose nude if you don't want you to. If a photographer says you need to, then chances are you need to not work with him. All photographers should respect your boundaries and the look you are going after.
4. You have homework as a model
Practice makes perfect. You got to practice facial expressions, research poses, find poses that work for you all the time, and figure out how to deal with your "problem" areas (yes no one is perfect). For example, if you have bad skin, you should be figuring out how to do your makeup accordingly so the camera doesn't highlight it. If you have a younger face, you should be figuring out what facial expressions make you look a tad bit older and sexier. If you have larger arms, figure out how to pose so they don't look really bulky. Stuff like that.
5. Scavenger Hunts
Always be on the prowl for new photographers - even if not paid. It is always good to have a lot of shoots and more people to add as references. Also, be on the prowl for clothing companies, jewelry, products, and more that would love to work with you.
