5 Things New Yorkers Hate About Living In NYC

But despite everything we still love it...

I'm going to start off by saying that New York is the best city in the world. Hands down. There's no debate. It's gritty and dirty and unforgiving, but it also might as well be the center of the universe. That being said... there are a few things people lucky enough to call New York home pretty much universally hate about it.

Here are five of those things:

1. Vermin

It’s a concrete jungle. As such, the only wildlife we get to see are rats, cockroaches, bed bugs, and squirrels.

2. It’s losing its soul!

It used to be said that New York is a big city made up of little towns… while that is still true to some extent, gone is the New York City of old- the one that nurtured talents like Bob Dylan and Ella Fitzgerald, the gritty, dirty one that inspired Scorsese and Bret Easton Ellis and the punk rockers.

3. MTA

Just everything about MTA. Enough said.

4. Never a quiet moment in the city that never sleeps.

Don’t you love waking up to the sound of sirens and taxi horns and that one homeless guy who stands on your street corner shouting “Praise be to Jesus!”? Yeah, me neither.

5. The smells…

I won’t go into any more detail about that… You know exactly what I’m talking about.

And yet, there’s just something about it. Maybe it’s the energy, the variety, the excitement. I just know that there are moments, maybe I’m walking down Broadway on some warm spring afternoon and I look up to see the looming shape of the Empire State Building in the distance, and I sigh and smile to myself. In those moments, I thank my lucky stars I ended up in New York, the city of dreams.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

Find excitement in your life and start exploring wherever you are right here, right now.

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…

Great Value Colleges

If you go to or went to Kent State, then more than likely you have done or will do some of these things.

1. You’ve slipped and fallen on the ice at least once.

The winters at Kent are brutal, and while the heated sidewalks and some great snow boots are always a help, there’s no chance you won’t bust it on the ice at least once in your four plus years at school.
