5 Things I Need A Break From

Winter break just can't get here fast enough.

Thanksgiving break was far too short. All too soon I was sent back to school and I must endure papers and exams and assignments for the next three weeks before I'm free again. I can't think of another time where winter break seemed so appealing. Break seemed like it would never come in high school. That feeling increased tenfold in college. There are a myriad of things I need a break from. For example:

1. Papers

Seeing as I want to be an English major, I don't think I'll ever truly be free of papers. But I'm not going to say no to three weeks of not having to analyze some poem or wax scientific on various treatments of mental disorders. And I'd really like to not have to think about APA and MLA formatting for a little while.

2. Waking up early

Never sign up for an 8 am class. I learned that lesson the hard way. You're in college now! You can schedule your classes for whenever you please! No more of that "waking up at 6:30 am" high school crap.

3. Cafeteria food

The cafeteria food at my college is...um...not good, to put it gently. At this point, I'd rather eat grass than ingest another cafeteria culinary disgrace.

4. Theatre

Yes, I know. This is blasphemy coming from the mouth of a thespian. But everyone needs a break from rehearsals every once in a while. I spent twelve weeks of this semester rehearsing for a show. The weekend after the show closed, I attended a thespian conference that at least a couple thousand students attended. I could do without stage right and stage left and jazz hands for a few weeks.

5. Being broke

Currently, I have two dollars and eighteen cents on my debit card. Needless to say, there's not much I can do with that. I keep hoping and praying that within the next three weeks, I won't run out of anything necessary to survival because I won't have any money to restock. When I go home from break, I'll get to spend three weeks having my parents buy everything for me. And that's pretty appealing.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
