The Daily Quotes

With the stress of finals quickly approaching, it is easy to fall into a haze of books and flashcards. While finals are a very important part of graduating, it is important not to stress out. I mean, it is only a week of little papers that determine a huge portion of your grade. No big deal, right? OK, so it might be a big deal, but being stressed out won't do any good. Here are a few things to do in your little bit of free time you may have before finals week or to do right when you get back in the fall!

1. Go On A Hike

Everyone knows how beautiful Virginia is. And yes, that photo was taken in Virginia. Just driving down the road, you can see some of the prettiest views. Since the weather is finally starting to warm up, it's a perfect time to start to looking at the beautiful views up close. Taking a short or lengthy road trip to explore the Virginia environment will make for some great memories and selfies for sure. This website and this website can help you pick the perfect trail. Just don't forget the correct shoes, water, and your hammock that you've probably only used once.

2. Explore Downtown Harrisonburg

It's only a 15-minute drive people! I know just about everyone from the Bridgewater/JMU area has been all around Harrisonburg, but have you ever really taken the time to explore downtown? I have lived in the area all my life and just this year decided to check downtown out. Just GPS Water Street Roof Deck Harrisonburg VA for free and easy parking and enjoy! If you love an artsy vibe, you will adore an afternoon downtown. Bring a friend too because the food options are fabulous! My personal favorites are The Artful Dodger, Pulp, and Jack Browns, but there are so many more great options that I haven't even tried! Another thing that is interesting about downtown before the afternoon. There are brunch options everywhere. For the night owls, there are always fun events going on as well. Check out these three links for some inspiration.

3. Reddish Knob

This is for all you people who hate physical activity but love scenic views. Reddish Knob is a mountain that you and friends drive straight to. You can even bring spray paint or chalk to add to the unique artwork that is on the pavement. This spot overlooks Bridgewater, Dayton, and Harrisonburg. Just from personal experience, the best time to go is when the sun is about to set. Below is a link to how to get there from Bridgewater College! You can change the starting location if it differs. https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Bridgewater+Colleg...

4. Stay In Bridgewater

Yes, you read that right. Staying on campus does get a little boring, but if you take a five-minute drive or a nice stroll, there are some pleasant things to do. If you are in a pizza mood, Sergio's Pizza is the place to go! Look closely for it though along the left side of the road, because it is easy to miss. It is owned and run by Sergio himself with Italian authenticity. His home made special garlic alfredo sauce is the bomb and his friend's Oreos are a nice desert too. If you like Mexican food, you can't go wrong with El Charro or Jalapeno's! Jalapeno's is a little more modern with some other options like burgers if you aren't a huge Mexican food fan. The local park is also very peaceful with a wide river that the public is able to fish and canoe in. Bring a kite or a blanket to enjoy the nice weather.

5. Play With Golden Retrievers

For just $5 and an appointment, you can go play with fluffy golden retriever puppies and dogs! Talk about a stress-reliever. Gap View Ranch and Kennel is a beautiful place where dogs roam free waiting to be played with and adopted. Sounds like heaven, right? This activity is really popular with JMU and Bridgewater students. Just search for Gap View Ranch and Kennel on Instagram and you will want to make an appointment right away to get some cute pictures with these pups. Check out the website for more information!

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!
