5 Things You Learn When Your Mom Is Your Biggest Supporter

Moms are a lot of things, but most importantly, they’re our biggest support system. Along the way and through the years, we learn a lot from them whether we realize it or not. I know I wouldn't be who I am or where I am now without the support of my mom every step of the way.

1. You learn to be independent

Having a strong woman in your life, especially your mom, will teach you a thing or two about being independent. You learn to be able to do things on your own and make your own decisions and deal with whatever consequences may come with that because everything is a learning experience.

2. You’re told the truth, whether you want to hear it or not

A supportive mom will be honest and straight up with you, no matter what. Sure, your feelings can get hurt sometimes but you know you can trust her with anything. She will tell you when that top actually makes you look fat, and when you’re being a psycho. You know she only wants the best for you, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the moment.

3. You believe you can do anything you set your mind to

My mom always reminds me that I can do anything as long as I put my mind to it. With this instilled in me from a young age, I was taught to dream big and go for it.

4. You learn she’s there for you when you have a bad day

You know she’s always waiting at home to give you a hug after a rough day, or any kind of day. You also learn that she is the best shoulder to cry on. She will listen to you endlessly rant about pointless or important things and won’t ever tell you to shut up.

5. She will encourage you to take a risk you’re too afraid of

She will be the one encouraging you to travel more, study abroad longer, and to try something new.

While of course, we all argue with our moms and have our bad days, at the end of it all they will always be our biggest supporter.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
