During the summer of 2017, I was given the opportunity to live in the Boston area for six weeks. Even though most of my work took place on the MIT campus, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, my coworkers and I would try to go into Boston to venture around the city as much as possible. Here are 10 things I miss about the city of Boston:
1. The convenience of the subway system
As odd as this may seem, I actually miss the T (short for MBTA). Even though New York City has their own subway system, the system in Boston is so much simpler. Each subway stop has clear, direct and readable signs to explain each line to the traveler. For someone who is horrible at directions, I found it nearly impossible to get lost using this system.
2. The view of the Charles River
No matter whether you are on the Boston side of Massachusetts or the Cambridge side, you always have an amazing view of the Charles River. I have had the privilege of staying in three different residence halls located in either Boston and Cambridge and I can honestly say no matter where you are, the view is gorgeous.
3. The Charles River Bridge/Harvard Bridge
In conjunction with the previous attribute about the Boston area, this bridge is a lot more than it may seem. This bridge connects Cambridge and Boston in one of the most effective ways. I have found that it is more efficient to travel between both areas via the bridge because it is solely a 15-minute walk to change the atmosphere of the area you are in. Cambridge and Boston are similar in the sense that they are hubs for college educated students, however, I personally feel as though Boston is more metropolitan.
4. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Do not get me wrong, I love and miss Stony Brook University with all my heart and know I am there for a reason. However, this educational institution is one that is priceless. I can honestly say that the resources, opportunities, community, and diversity that is found at this institution can be found nowhere else. I will forever thank this institution for giving a college student from a large state school on Long Island the opportunity to get involved in the culture and purpose of this institution.
5. The people
Throughout my time in the Boston area, my coworkers and students would probably hear me repeat the phrase “I think Boston is the slowed down version of New York City.” The main reason I feel this way is because even though it clearly is a city, it does not have the hustle and bustle feel that NYC has. Therefore, the people tend to have the common decency to hold a door for others, have an extended lunch with their loved ones, and value education over money. I may be biased because my sister, close friend, coworkers and other people I have met study in the area. However, I think the little things I have experienced make the difference.
Even though the city of Boston may think they have seen the last of me, they definitely are wrong. See you soon!
